About the Service

GABLE is a longstanding Shelter NI project funded through Supporting People, working in partnership with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive grants department.

We offer a range of services to older and disabled people living in the private sector to help them maintain their independence and live more safely and securely in their own homes.

Disabled Living Equipment

GABLE stocks various items of disabled living equipment for sale to the general public and the trade. Items held in stock include:

  • Various sizes and types of Internal/External grab rails
  • Temporary Ramps
  • Jar/Bottle/Can Openers, Shoehorns, Elastic Laces, Reachers for picking items up
  • Other items of equipment can be sourced on request

Northern Ireland Housing E Private Sector Grants

Information & Advice

If you are considering adapting your home we can provide information and advice on Northern Ireland Housing Executive  Private Sector Grants, including:

  • How to make an application
  • The Eligibility Criteria
  • What types of work the grants include
  • The costs involved
  • The timescales involved
  • Any other questions you have

NB. Grants are subject to available funding and NIHE approval

Making an Application

If you proceed to make an application we will provide the following services to you at no cost: -

  • Support and help right through the process until all work is complete
  • A dedicated caseworker who will look after your application
  • Assistance with form filling and submission of essential documents
  • Technical advice and support
  • Help with finding Architects, Contractors, etc.
  • Help when organising works
  • Home visits
  • Liaison with Occupational Therapists, Architects, Contractors, Building Control, Planning Department and the Grants Department

GABLE Trusted Trader Scheme

How it works

The Trusted Traders Scheme is available to anyone over the age of 65 who wishes to independently adapt their home and needs help to do so.

This scheme offers the following:-

  • A list of traders who have been accepted by the scheme
  • Service user feedback where available
  • Comparative prices from Architects, Builders, etc. for the works required
  • Assistance with contractual agreements
  • Support whilst work is ongoing, including, problem solving and conflict resolution

More Information

This scheme is intended to help access good quality, reliable tradespeople and protect against rogue traders.

Any traders wishing to provide services to GABLE service users must meet the following criteria:-

  • Be Access NI checked
  • Provide previous references
  • Sign up to GABLE’s code of conduct
  • Provide necessary insurance cover
  • Attend an Induction Meeting with GABLE
  • Carry GABLE Photographic I.D.

GABLE Helping Hands Service

How it works

The Helping Hands Service establishes your household needs and provides a ‘First Response’ where you require urgent repairs or maintenance to your home.

This service is available to anyone over 65 living in the Derry City and Strabane District Council Area.

The Helping Hands Service will work with you to discover and remedy any urgent issues around the home that might have the potential to cause you harm in the future.

More Information

The Helping Hands Service will carry out the following: -

  • Works to Prevent Slips, Trips and Falls
  • Urgent Repairs and Maintenance both inside and outside your home
  • Works to Prevent Deterioration of the house

There will be a charge involved which is subsidised.

Other services:

Subject to available funding GABLE offer small electrical safety grants through the Electrical Safety First Organisation.

Borrow a Wheelchair

GABLE can no longer provide a wheelchair loan service directly to the public due to changes in British Red Cross service delivery.

GABLE works with lots of other statutory and community/voluntary organisations who offer alternative services in the community, such as:

  • Health and Wellbeing Programs
  • Community Transport
  • Benefit Checks
  • And many more

We can provide you with information about these services and help you to access the services you need.
